Casualties of war, military or civilian, are often subsequently exhumed by intent or through accidental discovery. War Crimes investigations and exhumation of War Dead for re-interment, present a potential threat to workers due to the possible presence of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and Abandoned Explosive Ordnance (AXO) hazards.
In the case of War Dead soldiers are often buried with Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) along with their associated ammunition, including hand and rocket propelled grenades.
Mass graves of victims of War Crimes are sometimes protected by antipersonnel mines or other booby-traps - including Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) - to deter access and prevent discovery.
Both of these scenarios invariably occur in post-conflict areas where a threat from mines, UXO and AXO already exists.
